rabbit heart by daekazu rabbit heart by daekazu
Another art challenge by :icondaekazu:, :iconteanah: and :iconvinegar:
For each challenge we interchangeably give ourselves an idea or topic to illustrate and a short, specified time to execute it in whatever shape or form... of course, without knowing what the others are going to come up with.

This week's topic is =Teanah's idea: create something inspired by the song "Rabbit Heart" by Florence And The Machine -> [link]

***

It was my first idea. Everything. Mermaid, Rabbit, Heart. And totally redhead hair. ;] I don't know why.
Inspiration was also lyrics:
"Here I am a rabbit hearted girl
Frozen in the headlights
It seems I´ve made the final sacrifice
We raise it up this offering
We raise it up
This is a gift it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife..."

Almost everything I've done in Paint Tool Sai. But also in Photoshop CS. With some references.

Love the coloring choice! The silver-white fins, and the wind in her hair. Those rocks...I can really almost feel the cool wind and cold water, the misty cloudy day. I kind of wish I was there! (Though the mermaid's expression tells me I should not.)

It is probably a reference to the original story of "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen.

In the original story, at the end, the mermaid faces death, because she couldn't get the prince to love her, and therefore the curse from the sea witch will kill her. Her sisters bring her a magic knife, saying that if she uses it to kill the prince, she will be saved. It's a difficult choice, but she finally tosses the knife into the water and jumps to her death. (Don't worry, she gets rewarded in the afterlife--in the revised version at least.)

If you like mermaids at all it is a MUST read. That story is to mermaids what "Dracula" is to vampires. In my personal mind, Hans Christian Andersen wrote the rules for mermaids.
